Women's Health Q & A

What is women’s health?

At Alpha Internal Medicine, women’s health focuses on the unique health care needs of women throughout all stages of her life, including routine health screenings, family planning, and management of menopause. In addition to your physical exam, Dr. Horton spends the time necessary getting to know you and your personal health concerns. She is a detail-oriented provider whose focus is always on you.

How often do I need a gynecological exam?

Starting in your early teens, you need a gynecological exam every year. This exam not only helps you stay on top of your health, but also helps you and Dr. Horton build a more trusting doctor-patient relationship.

The gynecological exam includes both a physical and pelvic exam. During the physical exam, Dr. Horton checks your weight, blood pressure, and heart rate, and assesses your general health. She also conducts a breast exam to screen for breast cancer.

During the pelvic exam, Dr. Horton examines your external and internal reproductive organs. She may also conduct a Pap smear, which is a test that checks for abnormal cells in your cervix that may be early signs of cancer.

Education and prevention are the focus at Alpha Internal Medicine, and Dr. Horton spends time talking to you about your personal health needs to improve or maintain health and wellness. Depending on your family planning needs, Dr. Horton can also prescribe birth control.

What are bioidentical hormones?

Bioidentical hormones are a natural hormone replacement option for women experiencing symptoms related to menopause. Dr. Horton offers BioTE® hormone pellets, which are created to meet your very specific hormonal needs. The pellets are inserted under the skin and deliver a steady stream of hormones to restore balance and relieve your menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, and mood changes.

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a bone condition that makes you more susceptible to fractures. Anyone can develop osteoporosis, but women going through menopause are most at risk due to hormonal changes.

Dr. Horton is a women’s health specialist and provides treatment to women at risk of bone breakage, which may include:

  • Prescription osteoporosis medication
  • Hormone therapy
  • Nutrition supplements

Dr. Horton may also recommend you wear low-heeled shoes and make changes to your home to reduce your risk of falls.
